When selectiong a server in the multiplayer GUI with a custom banner / background image, you could adjust the background of the multiplayer gui to it. The black part of where you are moving to in the connecting gui could be filled out with the banner image of the selected server:

So it would kind of look like this:

P.S. the black background just looks a bit boring
